With a view to reach the Benefits of Postal Life Insurance to the personnel of Armed Forces, Army Postal Service took over PLI wef 01 Jun 1975. The Addl Dte Gen of APS performs all functions in regard to Postal Life Insurance of Defence Service personnel.

Eligibility
All ranks of Defence Service including short service commissioned officers and personnel of Border Roads Organisation, ITBP, BSF, Assam Rifles and CISF are eligible for Postal Life Insurance.

Non Combatants Enrolled of Army, Navy and Air Force are also eligible if premia are paid in cash at FPOs/CBPOs through Premium Receipt Book. The cases of defence Civilization have also been transfer to APS
Different Types of Policies are available to the troops for which different eligibility age is prescribed and carry different rates of  premia and benefits

Insurance Limits:
Sum assured will be in multiples of Rs 10,000/- after the first 20,000/- (rupees 10.000/- per other ranks). Under Yugal Suraksha the minimum sum assured shall be Rs 20,000/-.

Personnel of Armed Forces, Assam Rifles, BSF, CISF and ITBP in medical categories of SHAPE 1 & AYE do not have to undergo Medical Examination before taking Policy.
