Roads & Bridges

• Roads and bridges in the North East are, to a great extent, constructed and maintained by the army. From simple village tracks to the four laned National Highways, the army’s contribution is evident.
  
  
• Any traveller in the North Eastern can at once recognise the army bailey bridges that have been constructed over various rivers when the permanent bridge has either got washed away or is yet to be constructed.
  
  
• The Border Roads Organisation has been doing a yeoman’s service in this context. The Border Roads Projects in the Eastern Theatre are engaged in construction and maintenance of thousands of kms road network including agency roads in all the states. The Projects are engaged in road construction on behalf of several agencies such as Defence Ministry, Ministry of Surface Transport, North Eastern Council, Department for Development of North Eastern Region.
  
  
• Bridge Construction: Bridge construction is one of the most critical activities of the Projects and contributes a large percentage of the total bridging targets of BRO. The bridging efforts on various roads of importance are as high as 18.20 Kms in a road Sector of approximately 1795 Kms. This ratio of bridging effort per KM is perhaps the highest in the world.
  
  
• Other Works: Beside the primary task of Road and Bridge construction, the Border Road Projects undertakes other types of work such as building works of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, construction of Hospitals, resurfacing of Air Fields etc.

Telecommunication

• The army is always geared to provide essential telecommunication services in case of major breakdown of communications either answering to striking employees of Public Sector Enterprises or other major disruption.
  
  
• To provide communication to inaccessible areas in the North East especially in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, the Eastern Army (Signals) has embarked on a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to develop important telecommunication links.
  

Passenger Reservation System

The army has also provided a Passenger Reservation System for ease of railway reservation in inaccessible areas with the help of Indian Railways.

• PRS Tenga  -  (Bomdila, Arunachal Pradesh)
• PRS Dinjan  -  (Tinsukia, Assam)
• PRS Masimpur - (Cachar, Assam)
• PRS Tezpur  -  (Sonitpur, Assam)
• PRS Rangapahar - (Dimapur, Nagaland)
• PRS Binnaguri  -  (Jalpaiguri, West Bengal)
• PRS Shillong - (East Khasi, Meghalaya)
• PRS Fort William, Kolkata - (Kolkata, West Bengal)
• PRS Tawang - (Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, Civil PRS manned by defence personnel)
