Introduction

The Eastern Command Adventure Cell was established in 1998. Guidelines and policies are issued by the Army Adventure Wing (AAW), which forms part of Directorate General of Military Training (DGMT). The Army encourages all personnel to actively take part in adventure activities to include aqua, air and land adventure activities.

Present Nodes

At present there are three adventure nodes functioning in the Command. The nodes/locations are as under: -

    (a)     White Water Rafting, Kayaking, Mountain
         cycling- ECANT, Burdong

    (b)     White Water Rafting and Mountain cycling -
        ANC, Along.

    (c)     Para Gliding -  ARC, Shillong

Parasailing Nodes

As part of the new decentralization policy on adventure, 10 parasailing nodes have been established at various locations in the command theatre. These nodes conduct parasailing courses for personnel.

Eligibility

You should be a volunteer and have a flair for adventure. You should be mentally and physically tough and be in SHAPE-I. You should preferably be less than 40 yrs of age. Proficiency in swimming is a must for attending Aqua courses.

Interested personnel can fwd their names and details through their formations to GSO 2(Adventure) by 15 Feb each year. The adventure training is open to personnel, men & women.

Expeditions

Units/ Formations and individuals can also plan and undertake expeditions in Land, Aqua and Air activities any where in the country. Joint expeditions may also be planned. Prior training is essential to undertake any expedition. Training will be Imparted, if required, at one of our nodes. Equipment, technical expertise and funds are provided by the AAW on requests. Unit and formations are required to fwd statement of cases on the activity planned through their formations by 30 Oct each year.

Mountaineering Courses at HMI, NIM etc

All personnel, including lady officers, may fwd their names for attending Basic Mountaineering courses at HMI, Darjeeling , NIM, Uttarkashi etc. Final detailment is done by AAW. Personnel obtaining ‘A’ grading on the Basic course are then detailed to attend the Advance course. Course fees are waived if detailed by AWW. Personnel may attend these courses on payment of the course fees also. 
 

Eastern Command Adventure Cup

This mega event is a triathlon in mountain cycling, hill running and rafting. It Is conducted every year at ECANT, Burdong in the month of Feb each year. All adventurers who want to test their endurance and limits can participate in the event. Each Div/Area fields a team of 10 personnel. Prizes are awarded to the best teams, individual prizes are also awarded. The best three teams participate in the Army Challenge Cup at Raiwala in Oct each year.

Adventure Activities for Wards and Families of All Personnel

Young Lions Adventure Camp, The camp is org every yr in May for children of All personnel from Army, Navy and Air Force in the age group of 10-18 yrs. Events like rock climbing, running, camp life, navigation, water sports, group interaction and culture form part of the itinerary.

Detailed instructions are issued by Mar each year. It is a good opportunity for our children to interact with each other, appreciate nature and realize their potential and function as caring and responsible citizens.

Ganga Sagar Excursion. A 20 hour road and boat cruise is planned every year in Jan , coinciding with Makar Sankranti, to the Kapil Muni Temple in Ganga Sagar. Each yearr approx 1200 personnel and families avail of this facility. Detailed instructions are issued in Dec each year. This trip is availed by people posted in and around Kolkata.
